About Ziwei Dou Shu

Ziwei Dou Shu is a branch of traditional Chinese fortune-telling, said to have been founded by the Daoist Chen Tuan (Chen Xiyi). It arranges the Twelve Palaces based on the lunar year, month, day, and hour of a person's birth, and infers personality, family relations, career, wealth, and more according to the stars in each palace.

Twelve Palaces: Life Palace, Siblings, Spouse, Children, Wealth, Health, Travel, Friends, Career, Property, Fortune, and Parents. They are arranged in a fixed order by earthly branch, laid out counterclockwise starting from the Life Palace.

Fourteen Major Stars: Ziwei, Tianji, Sun, Wuqu, Tiantong, Lianzhen, Tianfu, Moon, Tanlang, Jumen, Tianxiang, Tianliang, Qisha, and Pojun — the most important stars in the chart.

Four Transformations: the four transforming energies Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji, determined by the heavenly stem of the birth year and indicating which palace each major star transforms into. They are the core of flying-star interpretation.

Decadal Cycle: the starting age is determined by the Five Element Group; it advances one palace every ten years forward (for yang male / yin female) or backward (for yin male / yang female), and is used to calculate the major fortune for each age stage.

The calculation core of this tool uses the open-source project iztro (MIT License) and follows the traditional star-placement method; results are for cultural entertainment reference only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need the birth time to generate the chart?
Yes. Ziwei Dou Shu determines the Life Palace and the positions of the Twelve Palaces by the birth time, so an accurate chart cannot be generated without it. The Zi hour spans midnight (23:00–01:00); a birth between 00:00–01:00 still belongs to the Zi hour of that day.
What is the difference between the Life Palace and the Body Palace?
The Life Palace represents innate personality and pattern, while the Body Palace represents the direction of acquired effort and environmental influence. Both affect the interpretive weight of the stars in their palace.
Why does the same star mean different things in different palaces?
A star's auspicious or inauspicious nature changes with its palace, the combination of stars in the same palace (the triangular and opposing sectors), and the Four Transformations. The whole chart must be considered together; one should not judge by a single palace.
