About Stock Connect

What is Stock Connect?

Stock Connect is the mutual market-access framework between Hong Kong and Mainland China. It comprises four channels:

  • Shanghai-HK Connect (Northbound): HK investors buy selected SSE-listed stocks (SSE 180, SSE 380, etc.).
  • Shenzhen-HK Connect (Northbound): HK investors buy selected SZSE-listed stocks including designated ChiNext names.
  • HK Connect (SH): Mainland investors buy HK-listed stocks via SSE.
  • HK Connect (SZ): Mainland investors buy HK-listed stocks via SZSE.

Northbound = SSE Northbound + SZSE Northbound (foreign capital entering A-shares). Southbound = HK Connect (SH) + HK Connect (SZ) (mainland capital entering HK).

How to read it

  • Net Buy: Buy amount − Sell amount on the day; positive means net inflow.
  • Cumulative Net: Rolling cumulative since Stock Connect launched — a long-term sentiment indicator.
  • Leading Stock: The most active or best-performing stock in that channel on the day.
  • A persistently rising cumulative net is often read as foreign confidence in A-shares, but it is not a guaranteed return predictor.

Data notes

Data is fetched from Eastmoney's public endpoints and cached per channel; the full day is typically available after 18:00 on trading days. Due to settlement and reporting differences, single-day net buy may differ slightly from exchange disclosures — please defer to the official source for compliance purposes.

FAQ

When is northbound data updated?
Stock Connect numbers start flowing after market close; this tool typically gets the full day's data after 18:00 on trading days.
Does northbound inflow mean A-shares will go up?
It is often read as a sentiment signal of foreign confidence, but historical inflows do not guarantee future returns.
Why does "cumulative net" differ from today's net?
Cumulative net is the rolling total since launch; single-day net is the day's incremental flow. Use whichever matches your question.
Are there eligibility requirements for Stock Connect?
Yes — northbound for HK/overseas investors via HKEX; southbound for mainland investors subject to account and capital thresholds per the latest exchange rules.
