About PDF to Black-and-White

What does this tool do?

It rewrites the color information inside your PDF so every page becomes grayscale (a single black channel). The conversion is performed by a server-side conversion engine that rewrites the PDF content stream.

Why preview before printing?

  • Color ink is wasted on documents that will only be printed on a black-and-white laser printer.
  • Color-coded charts and light-on-light combinations become unreadable in grayscale — previewing first lets you spot the weak spots before you waste paper.
  • The output is the actual file your print driver would send — no need to print a test page.

What's preserved?

  • Vector text stays vector (no rasterisation), so text quality is identical to the original.
  • Hyperlinks (both internal page jumps and external URLs) survive the conversion.
  • The bookmark outline (/Outlines) is rewritten into the new Catalog, so the bookmark panel in your PDF viewer still works after the conversion.

What's NOT preserved?

  • Color information (by design — that's the whole point of the tool).
  • Any PDF features the conversion engine does not understand — extremely rare in practice.

Is the file uploaded to a server?

Yes — the conversion is performed by our backend service. Files are processed in a temporary directory and deleted immediately after the response is sent. We do not store, log, or share file contents.

Will the bookmarks in my PDF survive the conversion?

Yes. The conversion rewrites the /Outlines tree into the new Catalog, so the bookmark panel in your PDF viewer keeps working exactly as before.

Is text quality affected?

No. Text is not rasterised — every glyph stays a vector shape, so crispness is identical to the original. Only the color values are rewritten.

What if my PDF has both color and grayscale pages?

The conversion unifies the color model of the whole document, so every page ends up on the same DeviceGray pipeline. Pages that were already gray pass through unchanged.
