What is the Life Path number
Numerology is a system that converts the birth date and name into numbers, then reads personality and life direction from them. Its origin is generally traced to the Pythagorean school of ancient Greece and the idea that 'all is number'; in modern times it was organized into a complete system by twentieth-century numerology writings.
Its basic assumption is simple: everyone's birth date and name reduce to a set of numbers 1 through 9, and each number corresponds to a personality archetype.
How to calculate the Life Path number
Add every digit of the birth date one by one, then reduce to a single digit.
Take 1990-12-28:
1+9+9+0+1+2+2+8 = 32, 3+2 = 5 → the Life Path number is 5.
If 11, 22 or 33 appears during reduction, most systems do not break it down further; it is called a master number.

- Expression: all name letters summed.
- Soul Urge: vowels only (A, E, I, O, U).
- Personality: consonants only.
What each of the seven numbers means
- Life Path: the main thread of life, the single most important number.
- Birthday: only the birth day; represents talent.
- Expression: your ability and way of doing things.
- Soul Urge: what you truly want.
- Personality: the you others see first.
- Maturity: Life Path plus Expression; the direction after about age 35.
- Personal Year: birth month and day plus the current Gregorian year; this year's theme, changing every year.
Master numbers 11, 22, 33
If 11, 22 or 33 appears during reduction, this tool keeps them in the Life Path, Expression, Soul Urge, Personality and Maturity (no further reduction to a single digit); the Personal Year stays with the traditional 1-9, and the Birthday keeps 11 and 22.
Master numbers signal stronger potential, usually with a heavier lesson — the feeling, the vision or the carrying capacity is a notch above the ordinary numbers.
Usage reminders
- Name numbers accept Latin letters only. For a Chinese name enter the romanization or usual English name;
Y is always treated as a consonant.
- The same birth date always yields the same Life Path. If your result differs from other sites, it's usually the reduction order (all digits at once, or year/month/day each reduced then summed) or whether master numbers are kept.
- Numerology belongs to folk culture and self-reflection; it is not scientific prediction. Do not use it as the basis for medical, legal or investment decisions.
