How AI background removal works

Why use AI?

Traditional tools rely on color or edge detection and struggle with hair, fur, or complex edges. Our model is trained to understand subjects, producing clean cutouts even on tricky details.

Privacy by design

The neural network runs directly in your browser using WebAssembly (ONNX runtime). Your image is never sent to a server — only the small AI model file is downloaded once and cached by your browser.

Powered by @imgly/background-removal, an open-source library under the MIT license. The AI model is fetched from the provider's CDN and cached in your browser.

No. The model runs entirely in your browser via WebAssembly. Your image never leaves your device. Only the AI model file is downloaded from the provider's CDN and cached.
What format is the output?
You get a PNG with a transparent background, perfect for compositing into other designs.
Which images work best?
Photos with a clear subject and reasonable contrast work best. Very small or very low-resolution images may produce rougher edges.
